Eastside Park Historic District

July 7th, 2004 in Washington D.C. the Eastside Park Historic District was listed on the National register of historic places as well.

We would again like to thank the New Jersey Historical Commission for awarding ESNA our $19,500 project grant which went a long way in enabling us to accomplish this monumental achievement. Many thanks also to our former President Michael Lemme and 1st Vice President Michael Wing and the entire ESNA Board of Directors for all their efforts and hard work, to our consulting team of Philip Esser and Paul Graziano, and to our local politicians who lent their support along the way, Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres and Coun
cil President William C. McKoy, and our Assemblywomen Nellie Pou.

So how does living in a Historic District effect all of us as homeowners? Being listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places does not place any restrictions on property owners whatsoever. However all of the following city owned buildings and monuments in Eastside Park that are more than 50 years old have certain levels of federal protections: the White House, Horse Barn and the former carriage house, Cricket Club House, Civil War Monument, Mc Cran Memorial, The Plaza of the Gay 90’s, The Plaza of Memories, General Pulaski Statue, Christopher Columbus statue, Charles Curie Monument, the Gazebo, and the Alice Weight Memorial Fountain.

Your Historic Districting Committee has received the cities approval to replace the sign on Broadway to include the words “Welcome to Paterson and the Eastside Park Historic District. Also, the Eastside Park sign on Park Avenue by the Columbus statue will also say Eastside Park Historic District, and all street signs will have our district name on the top of each sign also.

We will be holding an annual fundraiser every June to raise funds for these projects, investigate grant opportunities for Historic Districts for historic lighting on our streets and in our parks. Presently there are now 3 historic districts in Paterson, and 8 more proposed. ESNA would like to help these other neighborhoods get designated and are glad to see that the cities new Master Plan encourages this as well.

So Congratulations ESNA and to each and every one of us who can now say with pride that we are living in the Eastside Park Historic District!
